Summer of Hope

"A few years ago, I spent a week visiting the First Nations community at Pikangikum, known to have the highest suicide rate in Canada. Last summer, I spent another memorable week at the First Nations literacy camp on North Caribou Lake, near Pikangikum. The differences that I witnessed on my second visit to this remote region were amazing. The faces of the youth were greatly changed - I saw happiness in their expressions. I realized that this change was the result of creating interest in their lives, by focusing and improving their reading skills in a fun camp environment. I hope that more First Nations youth will have the same opportunity next summer." -Andrew Stawicki, 2005
