Beyond the Wave

Ravita, a midwife who has been supported by CARE with supplies since August, visits the eight-hour-old newborn she delivered at 2:30 am, her second delivery of the night. The mother, Marlina Wati, lived by the seashore with her husband and son, but their new permanent home resides far away from shore, nearer to the hills. She and her husband no longer wish to live near the water. They lost everything
but they all survived, and now, 10 months after the disaster, they have another
child — a son, who, in accordance with Muslim tradition, will be named in 44 days.
