Beyond the Wave

I asked Nursanti, eight, if she had a favourite toy, and she pulled an elf-like doll from her pocket. I am humbled by the way children seem to bounce back after losing family or friends. With more than 160,000 people dead or missing in Indonesia, everyone has lost a relative. Twenty per cent of the population lost their homes. Some survivors live in temporary shelters like this, a motel-like structure built on stilts. Each has simple washing, cooking and toilet facilities. In the next few months, Nursanti will move into a new home with her surviving parent and siblings.
