Beyond the Wave

All 15-year-old Jeyantha Jeyakumar can remember is hearing a deafening roar. When she woke up, she was in the hospital. Jeyantha lost her arm to the tsunami’s raging water. The loss of limbs is common for many tsunami survivors in Sri Lanka. Standing behind her is fisherman Manthiri Muthurasa, 65, who lost his leg in the tsunami. He survived by desperately clutching a window ledge, although he could not save his wife and six children. Sriskantharaja Arulgnanasee, 30 (far right), has lost 80 per cent of the use of his leg. He, too, lost his family, his wife and their five-year-old daughter. All have returned to the ruins of their church where they give thanks for their survival and mourn the loss of their loved ones.
