In the long term, beating AIDS means beating poverty. Africans must be able to prosper in the global economy. Yet current trade rules stack the odds against them. Much of what they produce, like agricultural products and textiles, cannot be sold to the West because of trade barriers imposed by rich countries. We have a responsibility to strike trade agreements that allow poor people to compete fairly in the global marketplace so that they can lift themselves out of poverty.
